Clearanail Treatment

Clearanail is an advanced fungal nail treatment for people who can't or don't want to take systemic medication.

This state of the art equipment drills a line of microscopic holes in the nail plate so that topical treatments can penetrate and effectively treat the nail infection. The idea is to create a firewall that the infection can not pass allowing healthy nails to grow out from the root.

We also use the Lunula laser if required, which is a safe, fast, pain free way to kill the fungus and stimulate nail growth. We discuss the options with you and provide you a treatment that is as painless and convenient as possible.

Removal of Nail Plate

Removal of nail plate through UREA ointment, allows us to gently, painlessly separate the infected nail from the nail bed and at a subsequent appointment remove the infected nail.

In severe cases where the root of the nail (germinal matrix) is infected surgery is sometimes required to remove the nail and then let it grow back.

Antifungals are applied topically to help prevent reinfection.

FAQ's

Frequently asked questions for those looking to treat a fungal nail infection.

  • How have I got a fungal nail?

Fungal nails are unsightly and embarrassing but the cause is usually secondary to trauma damaging and weakening the nail making it more susceptible to an infection. TP offers the latest cutting edge treatments for fungal nail infections including topical, Laser, Clearanail and surgical solutions.

  • What causes fungal nail infection?

Fungal nail infections are typically caused by different types of fungi. These fungi thrive in warm and moist environments, such as the insides of shoes and socks. Factors that can increase the risk of fungal nail infections include walking barefoot in damp public areas, having sweaty feet, having a compromised immune system, having a history of athlete's foot, and wearing tight-fitting shoes that trap moisture.

  • How long to cure fungal nail infection?

The duration to cure a fungal nail infection can vary widely depending on several factors, including the severity of the infection, the chosen treatment method, individual response to treatment, and overall health.

Laser therapy sessions might be spread over a few months, with noticeable improvement seen in the months following treatment.

Keep in mind that new, healthy nail growth takes time, so even after the infection is cleared, it might take additional months for the affected nail to grow out and look normal again.

It's crucial to follow your specialist recommendations and be patient throughout the treatment process. If you have concerns about the progress of your treatment, it's best to consult your podiatrist for guidance.

  • What happens if left untreated?

Leaving a fungal nail infection untreated can result in a range of undesirable outcomes. As time progresses, the infection often becomes more severe, potentially spreading to other nails or areas of the body. Alongside discomfort and pain, the infected nail may undergo permanent changes in appearance, becoming thicker, discoloured, or misshapen. Neglecting treatment also raises the risk of infection transmission to others and secondary bacterial infections. Emotional wellbeing can be impacted due to the visible effects of the infection, while difficulty walking might arise from thickened nails causing discomfort in shoes.

  • Is the fungal nail infection in my blood?

Despite some misleading information on the internet, fungal nail infections are not an immediate risk to health in most cases. They are not in the blood stream but reside in the pocket of tissue in and around the nail. In some extreme cases, disruption of the nail cuticle can ledd to secondary bacterial infections that could enter the blood stream.

  • Will my fungal nail come back after it has been treated and cleared?

Once a fungal nail is clear, if the nail is damaged, then the nail is susceptible to infection. This is why it's important to wear good fitting footwear and try to prevent damage to nails.
